More than 60 Iowa school districts are taking part in a national contest as part of “Teen Safe Driver’s Week”. As of Thursday morning, Western Dubuque is in the lead. The winner gets a large chunk of cash and a visit from American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson. Western Dubuque Principal Dave Hoeger says the contest is sponsored by State Farm Insurance.
Anyone can vote up to once a day. Participants can “commit” to safe driving by going online to celebratemydrive.com – you just fill in your email address, birthdate and town. The contest ends on Saturday and Western Dubuque is in a tight race for the lead in the “large school” category with a much bigger district in Danbury, Connecticut. As of this morning, Western Dubuque is ahead of Danbury. The top five finishers in both the “small” and “large” school categories will receive 100-thousand dollars for their school. The next 45 win 25-thousand dollars.
Over three-thousand school districts across the country are entered in the competition, including Beckman Catholic High School in Dyersville. As of this morning, Beckman was in 25th place in the “small school” category.
