High School Football Playoffs Round Two Tonight

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

In a class 3A second round contest featuring two top-ten ranked teams tonight; The West Delaware Hawks travel to Solon. Both squads come in with identical 9-1 records with Solon ranked 8th and West Delaware No. 9. Tenth-year Hawks head coach Doug Winkowitsch says the focused preparation by his players has been one of the keys in their success and it is even more important this time of the year:

WINK1 11-4

West Delaware has won five straight games, after a week five loss to 2nd ranked Decorah, all by at least 15 points. Solon has rattled off eight wins, all by at least 21 points, since losing to Iowa City Regina in week two. Even with the short turnaround Coach Winkowitsch believes it will come down to who can execute better because both teams will be ready with very similar steady offensive attacks and solid
defenses:

WINK2 11-4

It will be the first meeting ever between the two schools who have plenty of football tradition between them. All the West Delaware Football coverage with Jamie, Aaron and Bill starts after the Smitty’s Pregame show at 6:30pm on MIX 94.7 and kmch.com-main stream.

Our other two area games from KMCH Sports tonight also feature top ten ranked teams in their respective classes from the latest Radio Iowa Poll.

LIVE on kmch.com, 1A 7th-ranked 10-0 Maquoketa Valley hosts 5th rated 9-1 Wilton. It’s a rematch of a second rounder in Delhi last season with MV winning 48-20. Both teams have many of the same faces leading the way. With the first round win over West Branch, the Wildcats are tied for most wins in program history with ten and look to set that new mark with a victory tonight. Third-year head coach Wes Wilson knows they have something very special going on right now:

WILSON1 11-4

With two talented offenses facing off, Coach Wilson thinks the Wildcats defense will need to step up and set the tone for his team:

WILSON2 11-4

All the action from Delhi tonight come your starting at about 6:55 with Sports Director Jon Swisher and former Maquoketa Valley head football coach Greg Drew.

Our area playback game of the night takes place in Dyersville where class 2A 10th-ranked Beckman will entertain Waukon for the second year in a row. Last year, it was a quarterfinal contest with the Blazers’ prevailing 32-20. Beckman head coach Gregg Hammann has his team expecting another battle as the Indians have been one of the top 5 teams in 2A all season long:

HAMMANN1 11-4

Beckman dodged being upset in the first round against Hampton-Dumont last Wednesday night. Coach Hammann is not concerned that those factors will play a part in tonight’s game:

HAMMANN2 11-4

This game can be heard after the WD game on Mix 94.7 and kmch.com with Kevin Schuchmann and Dan McClean.
