Quasqueton – Victor I. Schmitz, 71 of Quasqueton, Iowa died Tuesday evening, November 12, 2013 at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa.
Victor was born on January 6, 1942, in LaPorte City, Iowa the son of Henry W. and Frances E. (Kaufman) Schmitz. He was raised in the Winthrop, Iowa area and 1960 graduate of the Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Shortly following his graduation he became employeed with the Quaker Oats Company in Cedar Rapids, IA, working in the Oat Milling Dept. for 39 years prior to his retirement in 2000. In 1963 Victor was married to Doris Lee Myers she died in 1993. On May 12, 2001 he married Patricia Ann Lewis in the Union Church, Quasqueton, IA.
Victor loved his family especially spending time with his children and grandchildren. Umpiring many Little league games over the years, where he became known as “Pops” to many. In his younger years Victor was an accomplished bowler, and an outdoorsman enjoying fishing and bow hunting. In his retirement he became a gentleman’s pool player and avid golfer, enthusiastically playing at the Winthrop Golf Course on Thursdays and at St. Andrews Golf Course in Cedar Rapids on Mondays.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Schmitz, Quasqueton, Iowa, six children; Sandra (Steve) McMurrin, Otterville, IA., Tammy Schmitz, Oelwein, IA., Rodney Schmidtz, Quasqueton, IA., Dallas (John) Schroeder, Farley, IA., Valerie (Jeff) Dahl, Harmony, MN, and James (Angela) Knox, Tipton, IA., nineteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and a brother; Loren (Lois) Schmitz, Cedar Rapids, IA.
Victor was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Doris Lee (Myers) Schmitz in 1993, a son; Dean Schmitz, and three brothers; Kenneth, Vincent, and Bill Schmitz.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday, November 16th at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Winthrop, Iowa with Rev. Kevin Jennings officiating. Burial will be in the Quasqueton Cemetery, Quasqueton, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Friday and from 9 AM till services Saturday at the funeral home.
