The 4-0 Hawkeyes were ranked 25th in the USA TODAY Coaches poll, the first time an Iowa basketball team has been ranked since the final poll of the 2005-06 season. Iowa was one spot shy of the top 25 in The Associated Press poll that was also released today.
The 2005-06 team, coached by Steve Alford, finished 25-9 overall and lost to Northwestern State 64-63 on a last-second 3-pointer in a first-round NCAA Tournament game. That is also the last time an Iowa team has made the NCAA field.
Ironically, Iowa is one spot behind Alford’s UCLA team in the USA TODAY poll.
Iowa returns to action at 6 p.m. Friday against Penn, then travels to the Bahamas to compete in the Battle 4 Atlantis. Iowa plays Xavier in a first-round game on Thursday, Nov. 28 (Thanksgiving night) at 6 p.m.
