The West Delaware Athletics Department held the annual Cross Country and Volleyball end of the season awards banquet at the high school last night. Both programs earned the “Distinguished in Academic Achievement” award for teams combining for a GPA of 3.25 or higher. The Freshmen thru Varsity volleyball squads had a GPA of 3.81 while girls cross country had a 3.79 and boys cross country a 3.48. All-WaMaC individual honors for earning a GPA of 3.5-4.0 went to 5 varsity volleyball players, 19 girls cross country runners and 6 boys cross athletes.
The volleyball program celebrated another very successful season as the varsity team went 37-6 in matches and 87-20 in sets. They finished ranked 3rd in class 4A and made their 8th state tournament appearance in 11 years. The Hawks won a WaMaC conference east division title for the first time since 2007. Head coach Brett Mather talks about yet another very talented varsity team:
Activities Director Mike Morrison presented coach Mather with a special recognition award to commemorate his 600th career match win in 20 seasons coaching varsity volleyball with 18 of them at WD. The milestone victory took place on Oct. 12th at the Westside Invite hosted by Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Mather was also selected as east division all-WaMaC coach of the year.
Other conference honors that went to the players included:
1st team- Paige Soppe, as an unanimous selection, Emily Thole and Carlee Ketchum
2nd team- Bridget Hoffman and Haley Morrison
Honorable Mention- Addison Brooks and Mariah Kleitsch
The lower level teams coached by Jena Goedken and Shea Putz also had winning campaigns. The JV was 12-2, Sophomores were 11-8 and Fresmen 21-2.
The Cross Country Teams showed great improvement in their seasons. The girls, led by 2nd year head coach Ben Moser missed out on a trip the state tournament by a smaller margin than most other years. The boys under 1st year head coach Dale Meyer improved on their times all season long.
