By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:
The 2013-2014 high school girls basketball season starts up for the rest of our area teams tonight including for West Delaware who will host Independence inside Seedorff Gymnasium in Manchester. What has been an out-of-division contest since the beginning of the new WaMaC conference format in 2007, turns into a Northeast division meeting tonight as the two teams will be in the same division for this season only. The WaMaC is a 15-team league with Waterloo Columbus leaving after last year’s sports season and South Tama re-joining next year. The league will crown an overall champion, as well as three divisional champs. Independence was 12-11 last season but may be the divisional favorite judging by the fact that a good majority of their top scorers return including senior guard Kelsey Ratchford. The Hawks were 8-15 a year ago and lost their top scorer Amanda Soloman to graduation but bring back practically everyone else for head coach Harold Shepherd, who is six wins away from 750 victories in his successful career. Shepherd will become just the fourth coach in Iowa girls basketball history to reach that mark. All the action of the season opener for the Hawks and Mustangs can be heard live on KMCH and kmch.com tonight with Sports Director Jon Swisher and Bill Logan as they start up our winter sports broadcast schedule with the pregame show after 7:15pm.
Other games around the area tonight:

Bellevue Marquette @ East Buchanan in Winthrop
Easton Valley @ Maquoketa Valley in Delhi
