HS Basketball: West Delaware Boys Open With OT Home Victory

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The West Delaware boys basketball team was able to enjoy a season home opening win last night, 43-39 in overtime over WaMaC conference cross-division foe Vinton-Shellsburg. It also marked win number one at West Delaware for first-year head coach Matt Uthoff, giving him his 89th career win in his 8th season with his fourth school.  In a back and forth tussle, the Hawks built their biggest lead to seven with just over two minutes remaining in the game. The momentum quickly shifted and the Vikings went on a 7-0 run to send it to overtime. WD responded with a 7-3 run of their own in the extra period to close out the W. Coach Uthoff explains the mind-set of his team being happy with the victory but knowing it was a valuable experience that they will need to learn from:

UTHOFF 1 12-4

That rough shooting from the free throw line had the Hawks 2 of 12 while V-S was 12 of 27. Hawk junior Justin Nolz led the scoring with 15 points, Junior Ty Cassutt added 8 and Freshman John Nagel chipped in with 6.

Coach Uthoff was pleased with the solid job by the defense but looks for more from the offense:

UTHOFF2 12-4

The Hawks will jump out of conference play, Thursday night back at home as they’ll welcome in Denver.
