The West Delaware Wrestling team got their season underway last night in a double dual at Waterloo West. In the first dual the Class 2A 5th ranked Hawks took on 3rd ranked in Class 3A Waverly Shell Rock. The Hawks got out to a 18-0 lead with pins from defending state champion Patrick Woods, Logan Reilly, and Sam Phillips, but then lost 9 of the last 11 matches and fell to the Go-Hawks 44-27. The featured match of the night pitted two top ranked wrestlers at 160 pounds as Jake Voss ranked #1 in Class 2A took on top ranked in Class 3A Spencer Derifield. Derifield got the early lead with a take down in the 1st and recorded two more to defeat Voss 6-2. West Delaware Head Coach Jeff Voss said that tough matches early in the season will be beneficial for kids later in the season.
The Hawk grapplers battled back in the 2nd dual of the night against Waterloo West winning 11 matches while picking up 7 falls as they defeated the Wahawks 56-21.
