Maquoketa Valley has been honored by the Iowa High School Athletic Association for their act of sportsmanship against Iowa City Regina in their final football game of the season. Following their quarterfinal loss to top-rated Regina this fall, the Maquoketa Valley players rallied their team, classmates and parents to create a tunnel for the Regina buses, applauding and cheering for Regina as they left. A photo that captured the moment has been seen by thousands on Facebook and Twitter. Regina’s football team and administration was moved by the act of kindness and nominated the Wildcats for the IHSAA Award of Excellence for Exemplary Display of Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity. The honor has been awarded to Maquoketa Valley. IHSAA Executive Director Richar Wulkow says, “We hope the good will that was exhibited and accepted becomes a standard for others to follow”.
