Irene Fern Paige, 89, formerly from Manchester, passed away with friends at her side on January 5, 2014, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home. Irene was the second of six children born to Otto and Vesta (Bresee from France ) Opperman in Strawberry Point on October 29, 1924.
Irene was united in marriage to Gerald Paige on August 3, 1947. Together they had one son, Dennis. Irene and Gerald farmed around the West Union and Strawberry Point areas, for a few years then moved to Manchester. Irene worked at the Schultz Five and Dime Store in downtown Manchester and also when they moved to the east end of town.
Irene loved children and enjoyed babysitting and mothering a few after leaving Schultz’s. Irene and Gerald loved to fish and camp in their spare time, spending many days and nights at their lot in Prairie du Chien. Irene was strong in her faith and rarely missed a Sunday service. She also belonged to many of the womens’ groups.
Irene is survived by one brother, George Opperman of Hawkeye; and many nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by her special families and friends.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Dennis; her husband, Gerald in 1989; two brothers, Wayne and Hank “Junior”; and twin sisters, Wilma and Lena.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 9,2014, at the United Methodist Church in Manchester: Officiating: Rev. Mike Druhl
Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester; and one hour before service at the church on Thursday.
Interment: Cass Township Cemetery - Strawberry Point, Iowa.
