Charlotte Elaine Houska, 72, of Strawberry Point, died at the Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on March 4, 1941, at home on the farm near Lima, Iowa, the daughter of William C. and Mable (Kelly) Jones. The family moved to Lamont in 1945. Charlotte’s mother died when she was eight. After her mom’s death, her dad, Bill, and Charlotte moved to Indio, California. Bill married Fern Meyer Fowler in 1953 and she became Charlotte’s step-mother.
Charlotte graduated from Hemet High School in California and attended college at San Diego State University. Charlotte then worked at the university until moving back to Iowa, where she began working at Starmont High School. Charlotte also worked for Three Crosses Ranch and then Swales in Strawberry Point for over 20 years until 2013.
On August 19, 1967, Charlotte was united in marriage to Francis “Fritz” Houska at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont.
Charlotte was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont and a current member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. She enjoyed listening to music, reading, traveling, working crossword puzzles, being outdoors, ice fishing with “Fritz”; and watching sports; but family was her true love.
Survivors include her husband, “Fritz” Houska of Strawberry Point; two daughters, Elaine Houska (and granddog Peanut) of Newport News, Virginia, and Sarah (Tom) Shadle of Ely; two grandchildren, Courtney and T. J. Shadle of Ely; her special pets: her dog, Summer and her cat, Abbie; two sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Linderwell of Strawberry Point, and Bonita “Bean” (Art) Eschen of Lamont; one sister-in-law, Jean Jones of Indiana; a step-brother, Larry (Delores) Fowler of California; a step-sister, Dawn (Arnold) Thomas, of California; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mable Jones; her step-mother, Fern; and one brother Robert (Marian) Jones.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Strawberry Point or the Lima Church and Cemetery.

Visitation: 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 13, 2014, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point with an 8:00 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation also one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.
