HS Sports; Friday 1-24 Scheduled Contests

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

In high school boys basketball tonight our featured game is West Delaware playing host to class 3A #9 Western Dubuque. The Bobcats are 9-2 overall, taking their 1st place 3-0 record in the WaMaC NE division against the Hawks who are 4-10 and 1-2 in divisional play. Both teams are coming in on six-game streaks; with the Bobcats winning 6 in a row and the Hawks dropping that many consecutively.  It’ll be the first meeting for first-year Hawks head coach Matt Uthoff coaching his alma mater against the man who coached him his senior year at West Delaware:

UTHOFF1 1-24

The veteran Western Dubuque head coach Dennis Geraghty says the Hawks aren’t that far away from being a quality team:

Sports Director Jon Swisher and Bill Logan will have all the action from Seedorff Gymnasium around 7:30pm live on KMCH and KMCH.com.

Elsewhere in boys play;

Beckman @ Anamosa
Northeast @ Cascade, Western Dubuque
Maquoketa Valley @ Cedar Valley Christian School
East Buchanan @ Ed-Co
North Cedar @ Monticello
North Fayette Valley @ Starmont
North Linn @ Bellevue Marquette

On the girls side of things, it’ll be two top-fifth teen ranked rivals battling it out in Epworth. As class 4A #6 Western Dubuque 13-1 hosts 4A #12 West Delaware 13-2. Both teams are undefeated in NE division WaMaC play and are tied for the overall conference lead with Williamsburg, the team who gave the Bobcats and hawks their lone conference loss. Hawks veteran head coach Harold Shepherd doesn’t have to talk rankings to his squad for them to realize the importance of this contest:

SHEP1 1-24

Both teams are pretty similar stat wise; the Hawks average 46 points a game while the Bobcats score 50. Both team allow 37 and 36 respectively. Coach Shepherd knows his team will have to slow down Western Dubuque’s scoring or keep pace with them by scoring often themselves:

SHEP2 1-24

Western Dubuque sixth-year head coach Amy Ostwinkle knows her team will have to be ready tonight but she also admits these games will only make them stronger in the long run:

We’ll have updates from Western Dubuque high school during our live coverage of the boys’ WD game tonight here from KMCH Sports.
