Five area wrestlers took part in the 36th Annual North South All Star meet Saturday in Charles City which pits the top seniors in the state against one another in dual team format. Patrick Woods of West Delaware started the night with a 5-2 win over three time state qualifier Zach Fowler of Alburnett. Woods a three time state place winner and state champion for the Hawks in 2013 said it was a great honor to be selected as one of the top seniors in his weight class.
At 160 pounds Jake Voss of West Delaware fell to four time state qualifier and 2013 champion Spencer Derifield from Waverly Shell Rock by a score of 7-1. Voss who became West Delaware’s all time wins leader with a 165-27 record and was a three time place winner for the Hawks said he enjoyed wrestling in the relaxed atmosphere and going out and having fun.
East Buchanan’s Tyler Hoffman was a 10-0 major decision winner over Linn Mar’s Andrew Holladay. Hoffman a two time state place winner for the Buccaneers finished his career with a 168-21 record says it was honor to be selected for the meet but he prepared the same as any other meet.
Tyler Yonkovic who was part of the duo of Maquoketa Valley’s first state champions was a 4-2 winner over this years Class 2A state champion Tyler Putney from Forest City. With many college coaches in attendance Yonkovic took advantage of the opportunity to show them what he can do on the mat.
In the last match of the night Kyle Fank from Independence was leading Mitch Bowman of North Scott when the two wrestlers got in a scramble and Bowman caught Fank on his back recording the fall. Fank a state runner up this season for the Mustangs was very honored to be selected and wrestle with some of the best kids in the state.
