Bernice Elizabeth (Wedewer) Lueken, 88, of Colesburg passed away peacefully at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood on Monday, December 30, 2013, where she had been a resident for the past several months. Bernice was born on March 26, 1925, the oldest of six children of Arthur and Clara (Bildstein) Wedewer and grew up on a farm near New Vienna, Iowa.
On December 30, 1947, she married Arnold H. Lueken at St. Boniface Church in New Vienna, Iowa. Together, they built, managed and worked a very successful farming operation near Colesburg raising six children. Mom always said she was born 50 years too soon as she loved to learn and experience new things but had been born a child of the depression and had been deprived her high school education to help her family. She often mused how life might have been different if she had been able to pursue an education. She used her relatively short formal education to great advantage, combining that with a strong ethic of hard, never-ending work. She worked as a housekeeper for family friends and at a local restaurant until her marriage. Her children will remember her most for her hard work ethics, her strong will, her large gardens and beautiful flowers and her delicious potato salad and lemon pie. She loved to take them fishing, travel, play cards always to win, and was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan through all their losing seasons.
Bernice is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 66 years; her six children, Shirley Lueken, Clearwater, Florida, Lois (Dennis) Steines, Dyersville, Iowa, Jan (Ruth) of Colesburg, David (Judy) of Greeley, Jeffrey (Terri) of Anamosa, and Steven (Jill) of Colesburg; 12 Grandchildren; Holly (David) Moorman, Benjamin (Maria) Lueken, Kara (Neil) Crane, Sara Lueken, Joshua (Katie) Lueken, Jessica (Phil) Parsons, Justin (Marissa) Lueken, Jennifer (Jordan) Perrinjaquet, Lucie (Anthony Schmitz) Lueken, Tony Lueken, Dakota Lueken, and Hunter Lueken; 14 great-grandchildren and 2 more on the way; Austin and Alexander Hansel, Cash Moorman, Reegan and Rylee Lueken, Mila Crane, Alexandra, Ezra and Julian Parsons, Mack, Zeke and Huck Perrinjaquet, Lawson Lueken and Kain Schmitz; one sister, Elaine (Francis) Vonderhaar; in-laws, Darlene Wedewer, New Vienna, Kathleen (Albert) Trenkamp, Dyersville, Joan Wedewer, Dubuque, Rita Engelken, Greeley, Mildred (Al) Lombard, Iowa City, Paul (Luella) Lueken, Garber, Robert (Elaine) Lueken, Dyersville, Willie (Joann) Lueken, Durango, and Donald (Mikki) Lueken, Sherrill.
