Carol Mae (Casper) Zumbach – Coggon

Carol Mae (Casper) Zumbach was born on April 16, 1928 in Monticello, Iowa. She
was the fifth of six children born to Tobe and Anna (Farhni) Casper. She was baptized May 12, 1928, and later confirmed at St. Peter and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Castle Grove. Carol spent her childhood on the farm in rural Monticello where she helped with the milking and farm chores. Her mother died when Carol was just 9 years old and she learned early what hard work and responsibility was. She was working for Doctor Thomas’ family in Monticello by the time she was 16 and enrolled in Wartburg College after high school graduation.
She married Myron Calvin Zumbach on December 25, 1946, at St. Peter and St.Paul Lutheran Church in Castle Grove. They began their partnership living on the farm in Delaware County where they lived all of their married life.
Carol was a great farm wife and enjoyed gardening, canning, and her chickens. She spent much time speaking out for agriculture and the beef industry. She began the Delaware County Cowbells which eventually merged into the Delaware County Cattlewomen. She was active in Peace Lutheran Church in Ryan, Iowa, and spent many years teaching Sunday School, Bible School and serving on many committees including the Ladies Aide, Ice Cream Socials, Soup Suppers and Quilting Circle. She was a member of the neighborhood women’s Merry Makers Club. She also served many years for the Delaware County Historical Society.
Her grandchildren were always glad for the chance to spend some time with Grandma because she would let them have water fights, make mud pies, dress up in old clothes, go to garage sales and help her bake cookies and apple bars. Carol was a people person and enjoyed helping others. She had a great sense of humor and never tired of making people laugh and brightening their day.
Carol was on the Board of the Good Neighbor Home for many years and was one of the first to support the addition of an Alzheimer’s Unit. She has spent the last ten years in the Alzheimer’s Garden View Unit at the Good Neighbor Home. The staff at the GNH has been like a family to her and has taken excellent care of her and her family.
