The DNR investigated a manure leak Tuesday afternoon near Central City. Ralph Staal of Dairy Venture southeast of town reported the leak lasted about an hour. Manure traveled down a ditch along Waubeek Road about a half mile to an unnamed tributary of the Wapsipinicon River. The DNR says the producer dammed the tributary downstream of the ditch entrance to stop the manure flow and pumped the tributary overnight. A tile line that the producer did not know about bypassed the tributary dam, so some manure may have reached the Wapsipinicon River. Twenty dead minnows were found in the tributary. The DNR says due to the quick action of the producer, the impact of the leak wasn’t as bad as it could have been, but he could still faces fines. The DNR will investigate the fish kill and monitor the clean up.
