Dolores Ruth Frederick – Strawberry Point

Dolores Ruth Frederick passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at the age of 93. Dolores was born January 26, 1921 in Lu Verne, Iowa, to John and Anna Voss. She grew up on a farm near Lu Verne, graduating from high school in 1938.  She attended Upper Iowa University, earning a diploma in 1941 from the Elementary Teacher Training Curriculum and then worked as a teacher at Greeley, Iowa.  While at Upper Iowa University, Dolores met Wayland Frederick and they were married June 26, 1943, making their home on a farm near Arlington, Iowa.  Dolores again taught elementary students in the late 1960’s at the West Central Community School District, in Maynard, Iowa.   Dolores enjoyed farm life, gardening and fishing, and is remembered by her children as an excellent cook, especially known for her pies, homemade fudges and divinity.  She also had a lifelong passion for knitting and crocheting.    Together, Dolores and Wayland raised four children, John (Gail) Frederick of Postville, Iowa, James (Jan) Frederick of Sac City, Iowa, Joey (Ann) Frederick of Normal, Illinois, and Jeanne Frederick Vanda, of Urbandale, Iowa. Dolores was active throughout her life in the Eastern Star, the Lion’s Club Auxiliary, the Helping Sisters social club, and St. John’s Lutheran Church, Arlington, Iowa where she and her husband made many lifelong friends. In 1972, Dolores and Wayland moved to a new home in Strawberry Point, where they resided for over 40 years.

Dolores is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Lawrence, John and Emma, her husband Wayland, son-in-law Charles Vanda, and grandsons, Matthew Frederick and Scott Frederick. Dolores is survived by her four children, 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. (Noon), Sunday, August 10, 2014 at the Cass Township Cemetery in Strawberry Point, Iowa.  The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at the Edgewood Convalescent Home for the kind and considerate care they provided Dolores. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Arlington, Iowa.
