Three former area wrestling standouts will begin their quests to become national wrestling champions Friday as the NCAA Division 2 and Division 3 championships get underway. Carl Broghammer a 2009 state champion for West Delaware will wrestle in the Division 2 championships in Cleveland, Ohio. Broghammer a red-shirt senior and two time All American recently became Upper Iowa’s all time wins leader with 138 wins. This will Broghammer’s third trip to the national tournament and he feels like that experience gives him the edge over the competion.
Broghammer was an 18-1 technical fall winner over Andrew Reggi from San Francisco State in the first round. He will face Zachary Bennett from Pitt-Johnstown in the Quarterfinal round.
In Division 3 two rivals turned teammates will wrestle at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids as Brett Yonkovic from West Delaware and Ryan Fank of Independence will look to help Wartburg claim its 4th straight Division 3 team title. Yonkovic a 4 time state qualifier for the Hawks will be making his first national tournament at 157 pounds says although it is nationals he is preparing like it is just another tournament.
The 8th seeded Yonkovic defeated Terner Gott from John Carroll in the first round 10-4 and will take on top seeded Nazar Kulchytskyy from Wisconsin Oshkosh in the quarterfinals starting at 6 this evening..
A two time All American and state champion for Independence in 2010 Fank is looking to improve upon is previous two trips by setting his goals higher and doing whatever it takes to achieve them.
The 2nd seeded Fank knocked off Iowa Conference foe Cory Becker from Coe 4-0 in the opening round and will now wrestle Nino Majoy from Heidelberg in tonight’s Quarterfinal round.
