The class 2A 3rd-ranked Beckman baseball team will be back in action tonight in their final WaMaC conference East division doubleheader at home, hosting Solon at Jenk Field. It comes 4 nights after the Blazers gave 40th-year head coach Tom Jenk Jr. his 1,000 and 1,001 career wins on the road in Tiffin last Thursday night against Clear Creek-Amana. The 5-0 game one victory made Coach Jenk Jr. the 5th Iowa baseball coach ever to reach the 1,000 win plateau and 16th in the nation. His career mark now sits at 1,001 -455 in 40 seasons all as varsity head coach at Beckman. Blazer fans who gather inside Commercial Club Park tonight can help the Coach celebrate with free popcorn and watermelon (provided by Fareway) all night long. The Blazers are playing some of their best ball of the season and are on the verge of another WaMaC East division crown. Entering tonight’s games they have an East side mark of 9-1, good for first place with 4 division games to be decided. They have won 12 of their last 13 games and 6 in a row. Overall Beckman is 21-8 with 8 games to play along with finishing their 9th inning power outage suspended contest with Mt. Vernon from last week. The Blazers earned a 1st round bye in 2A district play when it opens this Saturday. They’ll host the winner of Clayton Ridge-Central and Bellevue next Tuesday.
The milestone W for Coach Jenk Jr. came one night after his long time coaching foe, Dubuque Wahlert head coach, Jerry Roling picked up his 1,000th career win last Wednesday night at home inside Petrakis Park against Cedar Rapids Prairie. Roling became the 4th Iowa coach to reach 1,000 wins and 15th nationally. He started his career at Holy Cross Leo and then spent 29 seasons at Cascade, compiling 750 of his wins there and in 9 seasons at Wahlert has 191 victories.
