The second-seeded Beckman baseball team improved to 28-13 with a 6-3 win over Hinton in their class 2A quarterfinal last night inside Principal Park in Des Moines. Behind a four-run second inning, the Blazers began defense of its Class 2A title at the 2014 state tournament. Down 1-0, Beckman collected five hits in the four-run second inning. Hinton had its chances in the game. The Blackhawks loaded the bases in the sixth inning but were unable to score when pitcher Riley Vorwald got a ground ball to end the threat. Hinton’s comeback bid fell short in the seventh inning when the tying run at the plate struck out looking to end the game. Both teams committed 3 errors in the contest but Beckman’s solid tandem of Zac Lyon and Riley Vorwald did enough on the mound despite the Blazers being out hit 11-8. Lyon got the win, improving his mark to 9-3 while Vorwald picked up his 5th save. Another key was the steady bat of junior Connor Klostermann who led Beckman, going 3-for-4, with two RBIs, and was a home run short of completing the cycle. The Blazers won their 16th straight in the postseason and 7th state tourney game in a row dating back to 2012 and improved to 14-1 in opening round state contests under head coach Tom Jenk Jr. The quest for their 3rd state title in row continues with a semifinal game set for 8pm on Thursday night, Beckman will face 3rd-seeded, 32-2, Van Meter who nipped Iowa City Regina last night 2-1.
