The opening night of high school boys basketball district play saw all of our KMCH area coverage teams earn first round victories. In our two featured games from KMCH Sports:
In Delhi, the Maquoketa Valley Wildcats as expected won big over Rivermont Collegiate 74-8. The Wildcats only allowed 1 point defensively in the 2nd half. MV improved to 10-12 and advances on to 2nd round play Thursday to take on Class 1A top-ranked 21-0 North Linn .
In Anamosa, the Blue Raiders overcame a slow start after being down by as much as 11 points in the 2nd quarter battling back to cut the deficit to 3 at the half. Adjustments made at halftime offensively and defensively set the tone as Anamosa outscored the Comets 33-10 in the second half for the 52-32 win. Blue Raiders 19th-season head coach Kevin Barnes talks about the rough beginning for his team and credits them for settling in rather than panicking and making things worse:
Matthew Walton led the way with 16 points, Noah Sams had 13 and Cole Sander with 12 for the Blue Raiders who improved to 5-17 and will move on to play the 2nd-seeded Northeast in Camanche on Thursday night.
In Monona, Monticello evened their record at 11-11 with a 57-39 win over Waukon. The Panthers will face 2A 6th-rated Cascade in Cascade Thursday night.
East Buchanan upped their mark to 3-19 with a 57-49 victory over West Central. The Buccaneers will play Ed-Co Thursday evening at Starmont.
Tonight girls regional play resumes for Class 1A and 2A teams with start times beginning at 7pm. For a few of our area coverage schools who had first round byes, their postseason begins.
Our featured game from KMCH Sports will come from Delhi as Class 2A 14th-ranked 18-4 Maquoketa Valley hosts 13-8 Wilton. All the coverage live on KMCH and KMCH.com with Sports Director Jon Swisher and Bill Logan around 6:50pm.
Class 2A 5th-ranked 21-1 North Linn will entertain Waterloo Columbus.
Class 2A 8th-rated 19-2 Cascade is home to MFL-MarMac.
In 1A, East Buchanan travels to Elkader to face Central and Starmont heads to Lansing to take on Kee High.
