The 10th-ranked West Delaware softball team improved their record to 29-7 with a 7-1 class 4A Region 2 semifinal victory over Western Dubuque last night at Sill Field. The game saw three home runs, the first by Bobcat senior Aubrey Maiers in the 2nd inning. The game stayed 1-0 until a solo homer by Hawk senior Hannah Cole leading off the 5th inning. Veteran Hawks head coach Kevin Schuchmann talked about being patient early on when things weren’t going his teams’ way and how big the Cole homer was:
That opened up the offensive flood gates for the Hawks as they scored 6 more runs in the final to innings with a total of 12 hits on the night included a solo blast by sophomore Bridget Hoffman in the 6th. Cole held the Bobcats in check the rest of the night from inside the circle, she only allowed 3 hits while striking out 11 batters and walking 3. Coach Schuchman has a great amount respect for Western Dubuque’s program led by 4th season head coach Rachel Rogers:
The Bobcats end their season at 19-22 and say goodbye to 7 seniors. Next up for the Hawks is #15, 31-8 Waverly-Shell Rock at Sill Field tonight in the Region 2 Final with the winner moving on to the state tournament next week in Fort Dodge. Coach Schuchmann talks about the match-up:
We’ll have all the action around 6:55pm tonight with Bill Logan and Sports Director Jon Swisher.
