The Regional Final at Sill Field took two hours and eighteen minutes and eleven innings to decide last night but when the final run was scored it was the 10th-ranked Hawks outlasting No. 15 Waverly-Shell Rock 2-1. It was a back and forth outstanding tussle from the start as the game stayed tied at 0 until the 6th inning when both teams struck for their first run. Then 4 innings of each team coming so close to scoring that elusive 2nd run ensued. Hawks veteran head coach Kevin Schuchmann talked in the postgame interview about the mindset his squad needed to have to withstand the up and down flow of the tight game:
When it looked like the 12th inning was a reality, Sophomore Kristen Wegmann reached on a 2-out error and came into score two batters later when Junior Megan Collins hit a floater in the air just out of the reach of the Go-Hawk shortstop. Coach Schuchmann talks about the difference maker in close games like this one:
Senior pitcher Hannah Cole went all 11 frames and was spectacular, allowing only 3 hits, 2 walks, 1 hit batter and striking out 11 to improve her season mark to 27-6. Coach Schuchmann comments on his superb senior hurler:
The Hawks improve to 30-7 on the season and clinch their 13th overall trip to the state tourney in Fort Dodge. The 3rd time in 4 seasons and first since 2012. The state tradition resumes for Hawk softball as the fans were out in full force supporting the latest edition of the successful program, Coach Schuchmann mentioned that the efforts didn’t go unnoticed:
The Hawks will take on 11th-ranked 27-12 Norwalk in the opening round contest on Monday afternoon at 1:30pm. WD joins two other WaMaC teams in 4A and 4 total who will represent the conference next week in Fort Dodge. Solon was a 9-1 winner over North Scott and Clear Creek-Amana beat Washington 6-1.
