Western Dubuque Names New Superintendent

Western Dubuque has named a new superintendent.

The School District’s Board of Directors has offered the position to Dr. Daniel P. Butler.

Butler has spent his entire educational career in the Western Dubuque School District – currently serving as the principal of Epworth Elementary School. He’s been principal at Epworth Elementary since 2012 – and from 2012 through 2016, he was the principal at both Farley Elementary and Epworth Elementary. Prior to that, he was an assistant principal at Dyersville Elementary and Farley Elementary in 2011-2012 and served as a School Administration Manager at Farley Elementary in 2010-2011. He also taught 5th grade at Peosta Elementary and 3rd grade at Epworth Elementary and has been the Facilitator of Human Resources for the district since 2018.

Butler received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from UNI, where he also completed a master’s degree in educational leadership. He earned his certificate of advanced studies-superintendency from UNI in 2015 and received his education doctorate from UNI in 2020.

There were twenty-five applicants for Western Dubuque’s superintendent position. Butler was one of three finalists interviewed by the board earlier this week.

He will replace Superintendent Rick Colpitts, who will retire at the end of June.

Butler will work with the Board of Directors to finalize a contract of employment. He’ll assume his superintendent duties beginning July 1st.
