William W. “Bill” Cumming – Davenport

Services to celebrate the life of William W. “Bill” Cumming, 79, a resident of Davenport will be 4:00 p.m. a week from today Sunday, June 22, 2014, at the Halligan – McCabe – DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. Private family inurnment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. The family will greet friends at the funeral home Sunday, June 22nd from 2:00 until service time at 4:00 p.m.
Bill died peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family. He passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014, following a courageous lengthy illness.
William Wayne Cumming was born May 14, 1935, in Sioux City, Iowa, a son of Wayne Anthony and Marie Leone (Manning) Cumming. He attended St. Benedict’s grade schools, Decorah High School, Decorah, Iowa and the University of Iowa, graduating with a B.S. in Commerce.
He was united in marriage to Kathleen Joan “Kathie” Lonergan on April 23, 1966 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. They have been blessed with over 48 years of marriage.
Bill began a 39-year career with Georgia – Pacific Container Plant, in Monticello, Iowa; and retired August 30, 1996 as sale manager.
He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, the Decorah Iowa Elk’s Lodge, the former Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club, and had been a member of the Outing Club, Lindsay Yacht Club and the Lake Davenport Sailing Club. He enjoyed golfing and had a hole in one, which he was proud to have achieved while on a company golf outing in Wisconsin. In his younger years Bill enjoyed biking, skiing and scuba diving. Some of his fondest memories was time spent skiing in Colorado with his girls, scuba diving in the Cayman Islands, and family biking trips in Door County, Wisconsin. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to Fr. Conroy’s Vineyard of Hope, St. Judes Children’s Hospital or the Handicapped Development Center.
Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Kathie, daughters, Kara Marie Cumming, Davenport, Mary Elizabeth (Scott) Hoskins, Kansas City, Missouri, and Katherine Lee (Kris) Buranapiyawong, Denver, Colorado, and a granddaughter, Olivia Leone Hoskins.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Patricia Hazher, and a beloved aunt Phyllis Manning. May they rest in peace.
