Five Family Members Die in Iowa City Shooting
03/24/2008

A woman and four children are dead following a shooting in an Iowa City home Monday morning. The shootings happened about 7 am on Barrington Road on the city's west side. Police are looking for a man who lives at the house, identified as Steve Sueppel. Authorities believe Sueppel may have been driving a minivan that crashed on I-80 near West Branch shortly after the shootings. The driver was found dead, and since the van was on fire, authorities aren't able to identify the body due to extensive burns. According to sources, Sueppel was indicted by a grand jury last month on charges of stealing about 560-thousand dollars from a bank where he worked. Sueppel was charged with embezzlement of bank funds and money laundering while serving as the vice president and controller of Hills Bank and Trust. Students and faculty at the University of Iowa received text and phone messages warning that there was an active shooter in the Iowa City area. Iowa City schools were also locked down Monday morning as a precaution.
