Iowa State quarterbacks battle for starting job
03/27/2008
AMES, Iowa (AP) - There's a battle for quarterback at Iowa State
this year.
Sophomore Austen Arnaud is competing with Phillip Bates for the
starting job.
Arnaud was Bret Meyer's backup last fall, completing 20-of-37
passes for 267 yards. Bates played in nine games last year,
finishing with five receptions for 73 yards.
Several other roster spots need to be filled before the season
opener at home against South Dakota State on August 28th.
Coach Gene Chizik says he may not settle on a kicker until the
fall.
Todd Blythe, the most prolific receiver in school history, is
gone. However, only three returning wide receivers caught more than
two passes last season.
The Cyclones went 3-9 in Chizik's first season.
Iowa State's spring scrimmage is on April 19th.
