Drake hires Arizona State assistant as basketball coach
04/22/2008
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Drake's new men's basketball coach says
the past week has been a "whirlwind."
Yesterday Drake announced the hiring of Arizona State assistant
coach Mark Phelps. He replaces Associated Press Coach of the Year
Keno Davis, who left the Bulldogs last week to take the head job at
Providence.
Drake athletic director Sandy Hatfield Clubb says Phelps was the
school's top choice.
Phelps is a veteran assistant and had worked under coach Herb
Sendek since 1996, first at North Carolina State and then Arizona
State.
Phelps says it was impossible to miss Drake's stunning run
through the Missouri Valley Conference and into the NCAA tournament
this year. He calls his new job an "unbelievable privilege and
honor."
