Practicing Severe Weather Safety During COVID-19 Social Distancing

With severe weather a possibility this weekend, how do we safely take shelter while practicing social distancing during COVID-19? Are community safe rooms okay to use?

National Weather Service meteorologist Rich Kinney says if you’re under a Tornado Warning, that threat should take top priority.

Weather spotters may be out tonight into Saturday, keeping an eye on any storms that develop. And the way these spotters train had to be altered this spring due to COVID-19.

This week marks Severe Weather Awareness Week, though the annual statewide tornado drill was cancelled this year. Kinney says they don’t have a clear indication on whether severe weather will be a big threat throughout the spring and summer, but storms – some strong to severe – are possible as we head into Saturday.
