West Delaware Begins New School Year with Changes

Today was the first day of class for most of our area schools.

West Delaware and St. Mary’s started the school year today, along with Ed-Co, Maquoketa Valley, Western Dubuque, Starmont, East Buchanan, North Linn, Monticello and Independence.

West Delaware Superintendent Dr. Kristen Rickey says it’s good to be back.

Eighty-three of West Delaware’s students have chosen to learn from home with the online option, but the majority are returning to school in person – and they’ll notice some changes to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

West Delaware students will notice changes on the school bus too.

It’s been over five months since students have been together at school – the year came to a sudden halt back on March 15th after COVID-19 concerns started to surface across the state. Dr. Rickey says she knows it’s been a challenging year filled with changes, but she really appreciates everyone’s support.

West Delaware dismissed early today at noon due to the extreme heat, with plans to dismiss early again Tuesday and Wednesday. Ed-Co and East Buchanan were also among those districts with early outs due to the weather.
