Delaware County does not plan to utilize the Pfizer vaccine that arrived in Iowa this week – instead, they’re planning to utilize the Moderna vaccine, once it is approved.
Delaware County Public Health says the county does not have extra-cold freezer availability, which is required for the Pfizer vaccine. The vaccine must be kept at minus 70 degrees Celsius. Moderna’s vaccine needs to be frozen too, but only at minus 20 degrees Celsius – that’s similar to a regular freezer.
The FDA will be meeting on Thursday to review the Moderna vaccine to determine if emergency use will be authorized.
The priority groups for the Phase 1-A distribution include healthcare personnel and long-term care facility residents. Delaware County Public Health is working with these priority groups in the county to determine who meets this criteria to ensure the vaccine is allocated appropriately once it is available.
