Anna Belle Hickman – Winthrop

Anna Belle Hickman, 107, of Winthrop, Iowa died on Thursday evening, December 17, 2020 at ABCM East Campus, Independence.

Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at the Fawcett-Schmitz Funeral Home, Winthrop, with Rev. Cindy Hickman officiating.
Visitation: 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Interment: Fairview Cemetery, Winthrop, Iowa.

Anna Belle Hight was born on August 5, 1913 in Walker, Iowa, the daughter of Minnie C. (Kautz) and Elmer E. Hight. AnnaBelle completed the family with one brother, Verle, and two sisters Iva and Gladys.

Anna Belle attended and graduated from Walker Public Schools, Walker, Iowa. Following her graduation from high school, she attended beauty school, and became a licensed Cosmetologist. Anna Belle worked at a beauty salon in Independence for several years.

Her career was “put on hold” as W.W. II escalated. She moved to Burlington to help with the war efforts and was employed at the Ordinance Plant making shells. When the war was over, she returned to Walker and opened her own beauty salon, which she operated until selling it in 1960.

Anna Belle loved ballroom dancing. It was while attending the regular weekend dance in Oelwein that she met Robert Hickman. AnnaBelle was united in marriage to Robert James Hickman on February 20, 1960 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home on his farm south of Winthrop and continued their dancing with friends nearly every weekend.

Robert passed away on April 8, 1982. Anna Belle remained in their farm home for a period of time but eventually moved to Winthrop to make her home.

Anna Belle continued to work with Kay Norman at Kay’s Beauty Salon and over the years a close friendship developed. They traveled together by bus and on cruise ships, visiting many U.S. landmarks and several foreign countries.

Anna Belle is survived by 3 Nieces: Carol (Gary) Hahn of Happy Camp, California,
Judi Halford of Terra Haute, Indiana &
Teri Sue (Tom) Brickley of Cedar Rapids &
2 Nephews: David (Cindy) Hickman of Des Moines &
Dennis (Jane) Hickman of West Linn, Oregon.

Anna Belle was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 sisters, brother, as well as a niece, Michelle Lamson and 2 nephews, Steve Gaffney and George Ulch.
