U.K. COVID-19 Variant Confirmed in Dubuque County

The U.K. COVID-19 Variant has been confirmed in Dubuque County.

The Dubuque County Health Department says one case has been confirmed in the county.

There are currently three variants of the COVID-19 virus in the United States, with the U.K. variant, also known as the B.1.1.7. variant the most common. Iowa currently has 63 cases of the U.K. variant, with 38 of those cases announced by the Iowa Department of Public Health on Wednesday.

Researchers believe that the U.K. variant can spread more easily than the original strain of COVID-19. They also believe the current vaccines will likely protect against that variant and additional studies are ongoing.

Along with getting vaccinated, public health officials remind everyone to continue with mitigation efforts – that includes wearing a mask, social distancing and washing your hands.

Dubuque County has lost 200 residents to COVID-19. There are currently over 330 active cases in the county, with five residents hospitalized. Fifteen percent of Dubuque County’s residents are now fully vaccinated.
