Two Employees Killed by Inmate at Anamosa State Penitentiary

An Anamosa State Penitentiary inmate killed two staff members at the prison on Tuesday morning.

The Iowa Department of Corrections says around 10:15 am, the inmate attacked multiple staff members and inmates in the prison’s infirmary. An infirmary serves as the prison’s clinic to tend to injured prisoners or staff.

Additional security staff arrived and restrained the inmate. The staff began attempting life-saving first aid on the victims until paramedics arrived.

A correctional nurse and correctional officer died as a result of their injuries.

The Iowa Department of Corrections says an investigation is underway. Names are being withheld pending the investigation and until family has been notified.

The department says this information is preliminary as they work to collect and confirm details of the assault.

The state prison in Anamosa has medium and maximum security sections. About 320 people are employed at the facility and the department website shows there are 950 inmates in the prison today.

Governor Reynolds has released a statement on the killing of the two employees at the Anamosa State Penitentiary. Reynolds says they will exhaust every available resource to deliver justice to those who committed this act and bring a sense of closure and peace to the victims’ families. She extends her prayers and deepest condolences to the victims’ families, friends and colleagues.

Governor Reynolds will order all flags in Iowa to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on the day the victims are laid to rest.
