A Linn County creek now has a new name.
Squaw Creek will now be known as Wanatee Creek.
It follows a recent name change for the park – changed from Squaw Creek Park to Wanatee Park after “squaw” was found to be offensive and disparaging toward a culture.
The Linn County Conservation Board held discussions about a name change with several groups and organizations, including Meskwaki Nation, the Iowa State Historical Society and the Linn County Board of Supervisors.
Letters of support from many of these groups suggested Wanatee Park to commemorate Native American contributions within Iowa. Adeline Wanatee was inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993 for her significant work in the Meskwaki Nation and in support of women’s rights across the United States.
The U.S. Board of Geographic Names approved the name change for Wanatee Creek on Friday.
