Flags are being flown at half-staff today to honor Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith of Independence.
Smith, a 27-year veteran of the patrol, was shot and killed last Friday during a standoff with a man at his Grundy Center home.
Flags are lining the streets of Independence today as the community honors their hometown hero. Smith’s funeral service was held this morning at the Independence High School Gymnasium, with his last call.
Governor Reynolds has ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff in Sgt. Smith’s honor until sunset tonight.
The Iowa State Patrol released a statement Friday afternoon, thanking everyone – including the Independence community – for all of their support this past week.
