Maquoketa Valley Dollars for Scholars is celebrating 20 years this year.
On Sunday, thirty-five Maquoketa Valley high school seniors were awarded scholarships through the program. Keith Kramer says every senior who applies receives some kind of scholarship.
That’s a long way from their humble beginnings in 2001, when Dollars for Scholars awarded 37 students scholarships totaling $11,000. Kramer says it’s because support has grown for the program and the endowment funds keep growing.
And this year, the Class of 2021 started a scholarship in memory of two classmates they lost during their school years – Anna Nefzger and Tiege Hunt. Kramer says fundraising for the endowment fund this past year went well – the class was able to raise twice as much as they had hoped, ending up with a total of $8,000.
