West Delaware Watching Weather as Commencement Approaches

West Delaware’s graduation ceremony is coming up Saturday – and school officials are watching the weather to determine if the event will need to be moved to a different location.

The commencement is scheduled to take place outdoors at the Delaware County Fairgrounds Grandstands at 10 am. In anticipation of the rain, a large tarp was placed on the track on Tuesday. The back-up plan in case of inclement weather is to hold the ceremony at Seedorff Gymnasium.

The school says the fairgrounds location was chosen because it allows more family members to attend the ceremony while still following physical distance guidelines. Each West Delaware senior has received eight tickets for spectators. If the ceremony moves inside to Seedorff Gymnasium, each graduate will be allowed to have six guests in the gym – with the other two guests seated in Hanson Auditorium, watching the ceremony through a livestream. The graduates would walk across both stages at Seedorff and then Hanson.

West Delaware says if a decision is made to move the commencement ceremony inside, it will be made by 9 am on Friday.

UPDATE: West Delaware’s commencement ceremony will be moved indoors to Seedorff Gymnasium, with the graduation parade to follow at noon at West Delaware Middle School. It will follow Doctor Street to Acers Street to Stiles Street to Prospect Street and end at the back parking lot of the high school, with Delaware County fire departments and Manchester Police leading the way.
