New Zipline Opening at Camp Courageous

The dedication of the new Craig & Lois Bauer-Newholm Zipline will be held on Saturday, June 12th at Camp Courageous. This unique zipline is the first of its kind in Iowa.

Campers and guests on the new Bauer-Newholm Zipline will be riding tandem.  They will be placed in a chair, strapped in with a 5-point safety harness and taken backwards 700-feet up a hill. At the top the rider will be approximately 110-feet above the ground, and be able to see for miles, before starting their zip to the bottom.  At the bottom, large airbrakes will safely stop the rider(s).

The cost of a zipline ride will be 10 dollars.  The first 50-riders on dedication day will receive a commemorative piece. Zipline t-shirts will be available to purchase.

Lois Bauer-Newholm had her roots in Monticello, the daughter of Carl and Mary Kleitsch and brothers, Danny and Chuck Bauer.  Lois wanted to do something to give back to her community and having had a hearing impairment since a very young age, she could identify with many of the Camp Courageous campers.  In addition, a zipline ride was on her bucket list.

Eilertson, Inc also stepped forward and donated weeks of labor and materials to put in the huge footings needed for the Zipline.

Camp Courageous Campers will be among the first to use the zipline, prior to it being open to the public.

Donations are still being accepted for the project.

Camp Courageous is a year-round recreational and respite care facility near Monticello, run primarily on donations.  Nearly 10,000 campers are served annually.
