Merrel Henry Schnieders – Manchester

Merrel Henry Schnieders, 90, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at his home. He was born on May 19, 1931, at his family home south of Oneida, the son of Aloysis and Eleanora (Kramer) Schnieders. Merrel was raised in the Oneida area and graduated with the class of 1949 from Oneida High School. After graduation he was drafted into the United States Army and served honorably during the Korean War.

On October 4, 1955, Merrel was united in marriage to Mary Ann Britt at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Hopkinton. Eight children were born to this union. After their marriage they lived on a farm by Prairieburg. The family then moved to Buck Creek where Merrel started farming. Eventually they settled in rural Masonville and continued to farm. Merrel and Mary Ann moved to Manchester in September 2018.

Merrel was an active and faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Masonville. He lived his faith and served as the groundskeeper for the church and cemetery in Masonville for decades. Merrel was a jack of all trades. He loved his family and cherished spending time with them.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary Ann Schnieders of Manchester; his eight children, Dennis (Barb) Schnieders of Lexington, Kentucky, Sharon (John) Demro of Plymouth, Minnesota, Deb (Jim) Nilles of Newton, Gary (Mary Chris O’Brien) Schnieders of Manchester, Nancy (Tom) McDonald of Hopkinton, Alan (Shirley) Schnieders of Manchester, Steve (Kelly) Schnieders of Clear Lake, and Kevin (Tammy) Schnieders of Delhi; 25 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Lou Parkinson of Edgewood and Shirley Hallett of Cedar Rapids; one brother, LeRoy Schnieders of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews.

Merrel was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ilene (Joe) O’Connell; a brother, LaVern (Mary) Schnieders; one sister-in-law, Valene Schnieders; and brothers-in-law, Darryl Parkinson and Al Hallett.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hills and Dales (Dubuque) or Camp Courageous.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., on Monday, July 12, 2021, at Immaculate Conception Church in Masonville, Iowa, with Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating.

Visitation: 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester. Friends may also call one hour prior to Mass at the church on Monday.

Interment with Military Rites: St. John Catholic Cemetery – Delhi, Iowa.
