National Weather Service to Survey Tornadic Storm Damage

Along with the two tornadoes that touched down on the southwest edge of Manchester on Wednesday night, there were also reports of tornadoes or funnel clouds in the Greeley area, as well as Fayette, Buchanan, Linn and Jones counties.

Nobody knows yet just how many tornadoes touched down in Iowa on Thursday afternoon and evening, but the National Weather Service says there were at least 12 and perhaps as many as 16.

Miraculously, there were no injuries reported, but there’s damage to homes, businesses, trees and power lines across central and eastern Iowa.

Tom Philip is a meteorologist at the Davenport office of the National Weather Service, which covers Iowa’s eastern third.

Philip would only say the damage in eastern Iowa is from four “possible” tornadoes.

Tornadoes were reported in or near the following communities: Dysart, Gowrie, Jewell, Lake City, Manchester, Mason City, Monticello, Nemaha, Stanhope, Stratford and Waverly.

Forecasters say a few scattered showers remain through Friday morning, but this weekend and next week should bring dry and pleasant weather with highs in the 80’s.
