Delaware County Teams Participate in State 4-H Dairy Judging

A Senior and Junior team from Delaware County recently competed in a competitive State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest, which was held during the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.

The Senior team consisted of Lane Domeyer, Alia Domeyer, Courtney Goedken and Isaiah Hammerand (Dubuque County). They earned 3rd place out of 6 teams in the division. The team also ranked 2nd Brown Swiss, 3rd Ayrshire, Holstein, Jersey, 4th Reasons and Guernsey. Individually those placing in the top ten were as follows – Isaiah Hammerand 1st Brown Swiss, 3rd Overall, 4th Jersey, 5th Holstein, 6th Reasons, 7th Guernsey and Milking Shorthorn and  9th Ayrshire; Lane Domeyer 4th Guernsey, 6th Ayrshire and 10th Brown Swiss; and Courtney Goedken 8th Brown Swiss, 9th Overall, 10th Holstein.

The Junior team members are Ford Domeyer, Ty Hoeger, Dominic Hammerand (Dubuque County) and Gracie Walz (Fayette County). They finished 1st in Reasons out of 4 teams in the Junior division. They also placed 1st Ayrshire, Guernsey, 2nd Milking Shorthorn and 3rd Overall. Individuals placing in the top ten were Ty Hoeger 1st Reasons, 3rd Ayrshire, Guernsey, 6th Milking Shorthorn, 9th Overall and 10th Jersey; Ford Domeyer 1st Ayrshire, 4th Guernsey, 5th Reasons and Milking Shorthorn, 7th Jersey, 9th Holstein and 10th Overall; and Dominic Hammerand 2nd Holstein and Milking Shorthorn, 3rd Overall, 4th Ayrshire and Jersey, 9th Guernsey and 7th Reasons.

There were six teams with 24 individuals competing in the Senior Division. There were four teams with 16 individuals competing in the Junior Division.

The coaches of the Delaware County Dairy Judging teams are David Kunde and Jeannie Domeyer. ISU Extension & Outreach Delaware County says they appreciate the support of parents, volunteers and the dairy producers who let participants practice at their farms in preparation for the state contest. This year, participants judged animals at the farms of Tim Goedken, Greg and Pam Carroll and David and Donna Kunde, in addition to practicing at the fairgrounds during the DelCo Classic.
