A barn in Coggon will once again be featured on a statewide barn tour this weekend.
The Dighton Round Barn was built more than a century ago by Rob Kirkpatrick. And his great-granddaughter, Lynne Rauch, says it’s stayed in the family all these years.
It’s not often you see a round barn. Many find it visually stunning, but it’s also very functional.
Rauch says they use the upstairs to store hay and straw. The cattle use the barn in the fall and winter – and in the spring, it’s used for calving.
Despite all those years of use, the barn is in great condition. Rauch says her dad, Dave Dighton, took great pride in the round barn.
She says her dad loved visiting with people on the All-State Barn Tour, which the family has been part of since the barn was renovated 16 years ago.
And Rauch says the one question they’re always asked is “Why a round barn”?
The Dighton Round Barn is one of many barns featured in this weekend’s All-State Barn Tour hosted by the Iowa Barn Foundation. The free self-guided tour runs Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 am to 5 pm. You can find a listing of all the barns on the tour at iowabarnfoundation.org.
