Judge Rules in Favor of Animal Legal Defense Fund Against Cricket Hollow Zoo

A judge has ruled in favor of the Animal Legal Defense Fund in a lawsuit against Cricket Hollow Zoo.

A Delaware County district court judge has ordered zoo owner Pam Sellner to pay a $70,000 fine or serve 140 days in jail.

In December 2019, the Animal Legal Defense Fund along with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa coordinated efforts to rescue the animals at the roadside zoo located west of Manchester. The two organizations transferred more than 400 animals on the property to rescue partners and sanctuaries across the country.

Over 100 animals were missing from the zoo grounds the day of the rescue. The lawsuit was filed for violating the court’s order regarding the transfer of certain zoo animals.

If Sellner does not pay the fine (at a monthly rate of $1,000), the Animal Legal Defense Fund can forgo the collection efforts – and in that case, the Sellners would have to serve a one-day jail sentence for each animal not recovered (for a total of 140 days).
