Two Injured in Separate UTV Crashes in Buchanan County

Two people were injured in two separate UTV accidents in Buchanan County on Saturday.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says the first accident involved two UTVs northwest of Lamont near 115th Street and Victor Avenue around noon. An UTV operated by Corbin Dehning of Ossian was eastbound on 115th Street when it collided with the back of another UTV that was slowing down as it approached the intersection. Authorities say Dehning wasn’t able to see the UTV in front of him due to the dust of the gravel road. The second UTV, operated by David Spier of Sumner, rolled over.

Of the five occupants between both vehicles, the Sheriff’s Office says no one required emergency medical assistance, but at least one passenger went to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Dehning was later cited for Failure to Stop in Assured Clear Distance.

The second UTV crash on Saturday night happened around 6 pm southeast of Fairbank near 110th Street and Deacon Avenue. The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says Richard King of Waterloo was operating an UTV northbound on Deacon Avenue and tried turning westbound onto 110th Street when he lost control and the UTV rolled over.

A passenger, Christopher Weber of Waterloo, suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

King was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated/Drugged First Offense, as well as Failure to Maintain Control, Open Container, Failure to Provide Proof of Insurance and Fraudulent Use of ATV/UTV Registration.
