Tonia was born October 7, 1980, Delaware County, Iowa, the daughter of Richard and Mildred Bowers. She was a 1998 graduate from West Delaware High School in Manchester and then received her CNA Certification from NICC. Tonia married Jeff Smith on September 7, 2005, in Manchester. She worked as Certified Nurse’s Assistant and then stayed home to raise her family. Tonia enjoyed singing, writing songs, poetry, and going on family outings. She was a woman of strong faith, her church, family, and friends were the most important things in her life.
When Tonia was first Diagnosed with ALS, she made a bucket list. First on that list was to go horseback riding. She said it made her feel free from her illness. Second on that list was to go to a bridal shop with Nevaeh to try on dresses, since she knew she wouldn’t be here to see her special day.
Tonia is survived by her husband, Jeff Smith: daughter, Nevaeh McDowell; son Zach Smith; father, Richard Bowers; sister, Becky; and brother, Chris, all of Manchester.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred; and son, K.J.
