A new season got underway for the West Delaware wrestling team on Monday with the first day of practice. The Hawks, who are winners of the last three class 2A State Duals, enter this season as the top ranked team in class 2A with eight ranked wrestlers, and head coach Jeff Voss who is beginning his 27th season at the helm says he looks at every new season as a fresh start:
The Hawks graduated 12 seniors from last year’s team including six with state tournament experience, but Voss is excited to see how this year’s squad picks up where last season’s seniors left off:
West Delaware has also won two of the last three individual team titles and return seven wrestlers with state tournament experience and 75 points from last year’s tournament. Kyle Cole, who qualified in 2020, Brayden Maury who qualified as a freshman last year, Carson Less, Blake Engel, and Logan Peyton who all three have made two state meet appearances, and seniors Jadyn Peyton and Wyatt Voelker who both have made three trips to the state tournament. Voss says with the quality of competition in this season’s class 2A field, that returning experience will be needed:
The Hawks will open the season on December 2nd as they welcome in top ranked in class 3A Waverly-Shell Rock.
