Gerald Rollis “Jerry” Klein, 81, of Manchester, Iowa, died peacefully on Friday, December 10, 2021, at his home in Manchester, following a long journey with dementia. He was born on July 23, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Raymond and Lois (Clary) Klein. The family later moved to Manchester, where Jerry attended St. Mary’s grade school and then Manchester High School. Jerry played football, basketball, and was involved in track. He graduated in 1958 and then attended Loras College before enlisting in the United States Air Force. Jerry spent his enlisted time at Rein Mein Air Force Base in Germany, as an administrative specialist, and was honorably discharged.
Upon returning to Manchester, Jerry became a salesman for the family business, Delaware Products Company. He later became a partner in the business with his brother. Jerry also worked at J.M. Jones for seven years and retired after being employed by Exide for ten years.
On April 16, 1966, Jerry was united in marriage to Nancy Bessey at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. Two sons were born into this union. Jerry remained a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Jerry was an avid golfer and enjoyed tournament play and getting a couple of holes in one. He had an interest in collecting coins, stamps, and prized his collection of Budweiser steins. Jerry liked to do difficult jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Sadly, during the final years of his life, his interest in these waned. Jerry did still enjoy large print word searches.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Nancy Klein of Manchester; his two sons, Christopher (Carolyn) Klein of Manchester and Shaun (Jamee) Klein of Coralville; five grandchildren, Casey (Kennedy), Courtney, Benjamin, Samantha, and Jocelyn; two great-grandsons, Liam and Christopher; his mother-in-law, Thelma Bessey; two sisters-in-law, Beverly Klein and Becky (Bob) Walsh; three brothers-in-law, Randy (Dolly) Bessey, Tracy (Linda) Bessey, and Kurt Bessey; along with several nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bobby in infancy and Ray, Jr.; and his father-in-law, Dale Bessey.
