Jean was born on May 23, 1936, in Gunder, Iowa, the daughter of John Chris and Ellen Christina (Olson) Johansen. She grew up in Lamont, Iowa, and graduated from Starmont High School in Strawberry Point, Iowa. She moved to Chicago, Illinois, and worked for the CB&Q Railroad. Shortly after, she met the love of her life, Garie William Duncan. They were united in marriage on September 14, 1957, in Strawberry Point. To this union two children were born, Lisa and Mark.

Following the death of her husband, Garie, Jean lived in San Jose, California, and Denver, Colorado, before returning to Marion in 2016.
Jean loved to spend time with her family and friends. She loved to travel, listen to live country music, play cards, and go to happy hour. Jean was kind, sweet, beautiful, and loved by many. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Jean is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Lisa Duncan (Billy Kennerly) of Englewood, Colorado; son, Mark Duncan (Tracy Brooks) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; granddaughter, Haile Duncan; sister, Karen Fisher of San Jose, California; and several nieces and nephews.
