Robert D. “Sam” Crawford – Independence and Winthrop

Robert D. “Sam” Crawford, 96, of Independence and Winthrop, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, December 15, 2021, at the Denver Sunset Home in Denver, Iowa.

Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at the Fawcett-Schmitz Funeral Home, Winthrop, with Rev. Josh Schunk officiating.
Visitation: 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday and for one hour before the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Graveside Service: 1:30 P.M. Thursday, December 23, 2021 at Oakwood Cemetery, Independence.
Final Resting Place: Oakwood Cemetery, Independence, Iowa.
A Memorial Fund has been established for Cedar Valley Hospice and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Robert Dwayne Crawford was born November 22, 1925, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Wade Elmer & Louise Emma (Holle) Crawford. He grew up on a farm west of Independence and received his education at the Independence Schools. Sam served in the United States Marine Corps from July of 1945 to August of 1946 in New York City. During his military service, Sam met Catherine Blanche Weiss and they were married in New York City. Sam worked as a plumber until he moved his family back to Independence. Sam then farmed with his brother, Don, until he bought his own farm south of Independence. Sam later worked as the manager of Quality Redi Mix and then as a truck driver for Bruening Rock Quarry, both in Independence.

Sam enjoyed going to auctions, playing cards and socializing with his many friends.

Cindy (Paul) O’Loughlin of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin;
8 Grandchildren: Sarah Cledwyn of St. Paul, Minnesota,

April (Steve) Gross of Woodward,
Dawn (Tony) Malloy of Williamsburg,
Nick (Meghan) Leibold of Strawberry Point,
Abby O’Loughlin of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin,
Stephanie (Matt) McCurdy of Cedar Rapids &
Nathan (Alica) Gross of Ankeny;
8 Great Grandchildren: Hannah Crawford, Mia Crawford,
Theodore Cledwyn, Helen Cledwyn, Chase Malloy,
Morgan Malloy, Campbell McCurdy & Nora Gross;
Brother: Don Crawford of Independence;
Sister-in-law: Anna Mae Crawford of Independence and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Catherine on May 11, 2009; 2 infant daughters: Sherrie and Cathy Crawford; 2 brothers: Earl Crawford & Caryel Crawford and 3 sisters: LaVon Fisher, Wylmarie Rasmussen and Norine Crawford.
